New York Times Error?: Follow-up on H. Res 1734

17 Dec

Since my post on the House resolution to oppose “the unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state” has received an exceptional amount of traffic, I thought I’d mention an apparent error on the New York Times website regarding the status of the bill.

It seems the New York Times has misreported a December 1rst vote (#591) on H. Res. 1735–which pertains to North Korean aggression–as a vote on 1734, which pertains to Palestine. Elsewhere, they list H. Res. 1734 as though it were 1735 (“H.RES.1734: Whereas Yeonpyeong Island is a South Korean island in the Yellow Sea, inhabited by over 1,000 South Korean civilians and military personnel;”), while nonetheless providing the correct link for the text of the resolution, which takes the reader to the government listing for 1734 (“.RES.1734 — Whereas a true and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties;”).

I think that they’ve simply confused the two bills, as the House Clerk’s website lists roll call #591 as a vote on 1735, “Condemning North Korea in the strongest terms for its uprovoked [sic] military attack against South Korea on November 23, 2010”.  I’ve contacted them about the problem; hopefully we’ll know soon who’s mistaken here.
